After taking his MSc degree in International Relations at the University of Amsterdam, focusing on water conflict and hydro-hegemony in the Middle East in 1992, Jeroen has researched, published, lectured and given trainings on domestic and transboundary water conflict and co-operation, governance, risk and security issues. After meeting Tony Allan in 1997, he became part of what was to become the LWRG.
He coordinated a four-year project for Wageningen University on multi-stakeholder platforms in catchment management with research on four continents. He then completed his PhD, which tackles conflictive river interventions in the UK, the Netherlands, Bangladesh, Turkey and Egypt from a constructivist perspective ('securitisation').
Jeroen has published many articles, among which his Hydrohegemony framework with Mark Zeitoun (2006) is particularly well-cited, as well as several books including 'Multi-Stakeholder Platforms for Integrated Water Management' (Ashgate), 'The Politics of Water' (Routledge), which he co-edited with Kai Wegerich, and his PhD thesis, 'Flood Planning. The Politics of Water Security' (IB Tauris). A new co-edited book comparing 'Making Spacefor the River' interventions is due in 2012. Jeroen is also co-edits the new 'International Journal of Water Governance', contributions for which are very welcome.
